Capernaüm

Nadine Labaki’s remarkable Cannes Jury Prize winner is an unusual, shocking, devastatingly poignant film about a boy who fights back.  Superbly directed and shot, the film is made vivid by the magnificent non-professional performers: in particular Al Rafeea, a young Syrian refugee, who is the ultimate method actor with a natural star power that carries the movie.

Not quite a documentary, not quite fiction, Capernaüm (an ancient city on the Sea of Galilee whose name is now a stand-in for anarchy and disorder) is indefinable, like conceptual art.  Yet is clearly a lovingly conceived cry of rebellion.
