Herefordshire Wildlife Trust presents
In Honour of Flies
with Dr Erica McAlister
Flies are some of the most complex, fascinating and ecologically important of all insects (and maybe animals too). They have adapted to all environments, from jumping back into seas to exploring caves deep beneath our feet, and along the way are carrying out essential ecosystem services to keep our planet clean, tidy and full of food! Even those species that appear to be destructive to us are actually inspiring us to develop novel technology, and there is much to learn about these small, but creative species!
Dr Erica McAlister is the Senior Curator for Diptera and Siphonaptera at the National History Museum. She has presented two BBC Radio 4 series on Insects: Who’s the Pest? and Metamorphosis, and has appeared on many others including The Life Scientific, Nature Table and The Infinite Monkey Cage. Her award winning popular science book The Secret life of Flies was published in 2017, and The Inside Out of Flies in 2020.
