Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Artist Marianne is commissioned to paint a betrothal portrait of a young woman, Héloïse. Knowing that her subject resists marriage, Marianne presents herself as a companion in order to gain her trust, but finds herself falling in love with Héloïse. This is a subversively seductive love story, as the women grapple with a society that prohibits not only sexual and emotional bonds between them, but also the control of their own artistry, bodies and lives.
Céline Sciamma’s direction is bold and restrained: an absorbing and immersive film.
