Ringing the Changes
Ledbury Bellringers and Friends present an 800 year journey with the Ledbury bells through war, peace and religious upheaval, starting from the time that the church tower was built in 1230. It is a lively story, full of humour and pathos, about bellringing: an extraordinary and engrossing activity that mixes sport and science.
Our journey is sprinkled with legend, history, poetry, drama and music and will cast light on an area of Ledbury heritage that is both familiar and mysterious to local people. You will meet various characters along the way including the saintly Katherine Audley, Oliver Cromwell, John Bunyan, a distraught churchwarden, a drunken local innkeeper and the famous sleuth, Lord Peter Wimsey. And you will hear the poetry of Wordsworth, Housman, Bridges, Owen, Betjeman and Donne as you begin to understand how deeply rooted the practice of bellringing is in our history and culture.
