WEA Film Study Day - The Western

In collaboration with The Market Theatre Film Club

Originating in 19th century pulp fiction and developing through early 20th century films of extreme moral simplicity, the ‘Western’ cinema genre grew into a complex art form that paradoxically both celebrated and questioned American historical myths.

The morning session will be based upon an examination of Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West, along with clips from some of the films that Leone references: most notably High Noon, The Searchers and Shane.

Image from Heaven’s GateThe afternoon will be taken up with a showing of Michael Cimino's notorious epic western, Heaven's Gate [1980 (USA – 15) | 219mins], which will be shown in the digitally restored version made for the 2012 Venice Film Festival.

Tutor: Michael Pyke.

The WEA, which is organising this event, has asked that attendees are at least double vaccinated against Covid-19 and have taken a lateral flow test shortly before the event.
