British rule of India is ending in 1947. Lord Mountbatten is the last Viceroy, charged with handing India back to its people. The film unfolds within the Viceroy’s House. Upstairs live the Mountbattens; downstairs their 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants. As the political elite - Nehru, Jinnah and Gandhi - converge on the House and conflict erupts, leading to the division of the country by creating the new Muslim state of Pakistan - a decision whose consequences reverberate to this day.
Stars Gillian Anderson and Michael Gambon.
