The Lieutenant of Inishmore
by Martin McDonagh
Martin McDonagh’s award winning play is a tongue in cheek black satire on the violence that characterised The Troubles of Ireland, particularly in the early 1990s.
Irish terrorist ‘Mad Padraic’ cares about one thing, and one alone, and - despite his title as the Lieutenant of Inishmore’s Irish National Liberation Army - it’s not his fight for Irish independence, it’s his cat, Wee Thomas! When Padraic learns that his beloved cat is not well he rushes home and all hell is let loose. As fierce as he is, Padriac’s soft spot for Wee Thomas may be the weak spot that the next aspiring Lieutenant of Inishmore needs to target. This dark and bloody comedy is the second play in Martin McDonagh’s Aran Islands trilogy, the other two of which are The Cripple of Inishmaan and The Banshees of Inisherin (film).
